Historic Scottish Hotel Overlooking Muirfield Golf Course Sold After 99 Years

A historic Scottish estate hotel with views over one of the world’s most iconic golf courses has been sold by the family that has owned it for nearly a century.

Greywalls Hotel, an elegant country house bordering the legendary Muirfield Golf Course in East Lothian, has been acquired by Marine & Lawn Hotels & Resorts, a brand under the U.S.-based AJ Capital Partners.

Designed by acclaimed British architect Sir Edwin Lutyens, Greywalls has been a landmark of luxury and tradition since its construction. The acquisition marks the end of 99 years of stewardship by the same family and adds to Marine & Lawn’s growing portfolio of properties located near world-class golf destinations.

Marine & Lawn, known for curating bespoke stays near revered courses, described Greywalls as a “landmark” in one of golf’s most storied regions. The group has also recently expanded its presence in the United States, acquiring Mid Pines Inn and Pine Needles Lodge in Pinehurst, North Carolina, another globally recognized golf hub.

The move reflects Marine & Lawn’s continued strategy to invest in heritage properties set alongside the game’s most coveted courses.

Gertrude worked with Lutyens on many projects, notably in the south of England, but as this project is in Scotland there may be a possibility others were involved. This course is – along with Turnberry and Loch Lomond – on of the most respected gold courses in Scotland after St Andrews Old Course.
